Advocacy is considered a vital role of nursing. The professional responsibilities of the nurse to recognize, promote and uphold the ethical standards of the nursing profession is embedded within the Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses of Manitoba and Code of Ethics, and is central to professional nursing practice. As part of the nurses’ role in promoting justice, nurses have an ethical responsibility “to advocate for evidence-informed decision-making in their practice including, for example, evidence for best practices in staffing and assignment, best care for particular health conditions and best approaches to health promotion.” (Canadian Nurse Association, Code of Ethics, 2017).
