ARNM Highlights New Extreme Weather Summer Response Guide for Winnipeg
As temperatures rise across Manitoba, ARNM is highlighting a new community resource designed to support people who may be at increased risk during periods of extreme heat.
End Homelessness Winnipeg has released its 2026 Extreme Weather Summer Response Guide, which brings together information on cooling spaces, hydration stations, shelters, outreach services, food and washroom access, and emergency supports available throughout Winnipeg.
Extreme heat can have significant health impacts, particularly for people who are experiencing homelessness, living with chronic health conditions, or facing barriers to accessing safe indoor spaces, water, and other essential resources.
ARNM is sharing this resource because access to housing, safety, community supports, and basic necessities are important social determinants of health that influence health outcomes across the lifespan.
“Nurses see every day how factors such as housing, income, access to services, and social support can affect a person’s health and well-being,” said Joyce Kristjansson, Executive Director of ARNM. “By sharing resources like this guide, we can help increase awareness of the supports available in our communities and encourage a coordinated response to protect the health of those who may be most vulnerable during extreme heat events.”
The guide also includes information on recognizing the signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, weakness, headaches, nausea, muscle cramps, and rapid breathing, along with guidance on when emergency medical assistance should be sought.
ARNM encourages members, employers, community organizations, and the public to review and share the guide, particularly with individuals who may have limited access to digital information.
For additional community resource information, Manitobans can also contact 2-1-1, a free and confidential service available in more than 150 languages.
